Open Position: Senior Writer / Editor

Organizational Overview

CfRN is a well-established hybrid NGO/IGO that has supported rainforest nations worldwide for over 15 years. We are currently in a period of growth, as stakeholders and donors increasingly recognize the importance of rainforests in slowing the climate emergency. We offer policy support, technical training, in-country capacity building, and financial support to countries through the carbon markets.

CfRN is looking for a Senior Writer / Editor to build and work with cross-national teams, creating compelling news and stories from across our rainforest nations. The person should be a skilled storyteller who can build a content strategy as well as create and organize a news desk and other communications collateral that speak to our donors and countries about the importance of our work.

A successful candidate is someone with a journalistic background in environment and climate who loves to create quality news articles and more. Someone who can work strategically and independently but stay aligned and collaborate. Someone with high standards who can still get the work out the door. Someone who feels passionate about slowing the climate emergency and saving tropical rainforests

Responsibilities:
  • The ability to find, report and write great stories from within our countries that advance the mission of saving the tropical rainforest
  • Commitment to accuracy, fairness, and integrity above all else
  • Ability to manage time and resources wisely
  • Ability to distill complicated technical and policy topics, develop relationships and conduct successful interviews
  • Work in a small communications team
  • Develop strong working partnerships with writers across our countries to understand what content meets our needs
  • Collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders to make recommendations and provide strategic direction on content
Requirements:
  • BA in related discipline
  • 5+ years of journalism experience
  • You have experience writing for a media outlet on climate, environment, or energy or working with a mission-driven environmental organization
  • You are highly organized, self-motivated, and love to bring order to chaos.
  • You ask the right questions and get the right details from highly passionate, mission-driven people.
  • You’re not afraid of adjusting to changes midstream
Location & Reporting

New York or San Francisco– with flexibility for working from home and an ability and willingness to travel (safely, of course!)

Remuneration

The salary for this position will be competitive for a commercial role in a non-profit organization. It will have the potential for additional income based on performance. The compensation will be dependent on experience, which will be discussed and vetted throughout the interview process.
