Open Position: Director of development

Are you a mission-driven fundraiser that cares about the climate and saving the world’s tropical rainforests? Do you have a successful track record of securing six and seven figure contributions from donors?

Organizational overview

CfRN is a well-established hybrid NGO/IGO that has supported rainforest nations around the world for over 15 years. We are currently in a period of growth, as stakeholders and donors increasingly recognize the importance of saving the rainforests and slowing the climate emergency. We offer policy support, technical training and in- country capacity building, as well as financial support to countries through the carbon markets.

In March of 2020, our REDD.plus carbon credits platform went live, hosting its inaugural country of Papua New Guinea – solidifying the first UNFCCC-verified, forestry carbon credits issued by a sovereign government. This is an historic step towards real progress preserving rainforests and reducing carbon on the global scale. Now, the Coalition is working to bring more countries to the REDD+ platform, expanding access to credit for individuals and corporations alike, to make meaningful advances towards curbing the climate crisis, while continuing the capacity building provided to the countries to strength their institutions and technical capacities.

Position overview

We are seeking a mission-driven, experienced professional to head up our development function and generate philanthropic support from grassroots campaigns, philanthropic foundations, and high net-worth individuals.
The Development Director will also provide strategic leadership for the planning, implementation, evaluation, integration, and administration for CfRN’s development division under the supervisor of the Executive Director and the Managing Director. CfRN is working to build out their multi-faceted fundraising program; central to this role will be prioritizing personal solicitation of major donors, events, online and direct marketing, and foundation fundraising.

The Development Director will help build and manage a portfolio of new and existing high net-worth donors, foundation and institutional prospects as well as devising grassroots campaigns. They will also be responsible for identifying and implementing strategies to identify and engage new funders and deepen relationships with existing funders. The ideal candidate will have a strong record of success in raising significant gifts from individuals and foundations and have a deep commitment to combatting climate change and protecting the world’s tropical rainforests.

They will develop robust and compelling funding opportunities and to create effective plans for cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding gifts. They will also be responsible for the set up and implementation of the software donor management. The successful candidate will be analytical and creative, collaborate well with a passionate and fun staff, and coordinate and manage multiple projects. The Development Director will play a key role in the leadership of the organization as part of the organization’s Executive Team.

Key responsibilities

  • Work closely with the CfRN Executive Director and Managing Director to establish fundraising goals, set strategic priorities, advise on program development, and develop and meet annual budget
  • Work with the Managing Director to develop annual budgets and income projectionsAdvance high net worth as well as institutional and foundation relationships that result in large philanthropic contributions.
  • Develop strategies, meaningful campaigns, and engagement tools for grassroots, foundations, and high net-worth individuals
  • Help track cultivation and prospecting activity and ensure the execution of action items
  • Research prospective institutional and individual funders
  • Solicit contributions from major individual donors and steward long-term relationships with donors
  • Secure invitations from foundations to submit proposals for support
  • Develop relationships with prospective individual and foundation donors to increase funding
  • Execute high-quality grant proposals, stewardship reports, and other written material
  • Communicate regularly and manage relationships with corporate donors, funders and foundations
  • Track proposal and reporting deadlines, ensure that all submitted materials are accurate and comply with any funder requirements

  • Translate our UNFCCC/Paris Agreement work into compelling donor materials to support our three programs (Policy Support, Technical Training & In-Country Capacity Building & Direct Finance)
  • Work with internal staff and consultants on fundraising and grassroots initiatives, with the goal of expanding CfRN’s reach and lists
  • Manage all grant activity in a central database and deliver regular reports to the Managing Director
  • Serve as the point person for implementation, management, and maintenance of CfRN’s database and ensure efficient system utilization across all units
  • Oversee the implementation of ongoing programs to improve the renewal rates of existing annual donors, creatively use events to upgrade donors and maintain a diversity of revenue
  • Help to grow the development team, manage a development associate, provide oversight to consultants as needed, delegate appropriately and ensure strong internal communication and coordination
  • Stay abreast of political and philanthropic trends and ensure that Board and staff are informed of changes in legislation and other trends and initiatives that might impact giving
  • Serve as an active member of the CfRN leadership team by attending and participating in staff meetings and understanding and contributing to our overall mission.
  • Represent CfRN at events in order to expand our network and cultivate donors.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree plus 7+ years fundraising experience
  • You have 5+ years of experience fundraising from high net-worth individuals andfoundations.
  • You have experience in fundraising for organizations or programs related to climate and environment
  • You are an enthusiastic advocate for CfRN’s 15-year mission to make ‘trees worth more alive’
  • Proven success in securing foundation and individual donor support
  • Experience with fundraising CRM implementation (i.e. Salesforce, EveryAction, etc.)
  • Experience managing a team, including experience in creating and managing successful major gifts programs
  • Well-developed writing, interpersonal and organizational skills and experience managing staff
  • Commitment to organization’s mission and understanding of current climate and environmental policy issues and political landscape.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with, and quickly gain the respect and support of, various constituencies, including a visible chief executive committed to raising money, established development management team, active board members, other senior leadership, program directors and donors.
  • Experience as an effective communicator who is articulate and persuasive in both the spoken and written word; must be adept at crafting materials and making presentations to a variety of audiences.
  • Ability and willingness to travel frequently

Remuneration

The salary range for this position is $100,000 – $150,000. This is dependent on experience, which will be discussed and vetted throughout the interview process.
